"Tippecanoe and Tyler too"

John Tyler, 10th President of the United States of America and the least known of them all, was born today 29th of March in 1790. He was the 1st Vice President to become a President instead of a ‘Vice-President acting President ‘after the death of President William Henry Harrison in 1841.

In 1840, the Whig Party nominated Tyler as vice president to presidential candidate William Henry Harrison. Promoting themselves as "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" (Harrison fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe), Harrison and Tyler won the elections and were inaugurated in March 1841. He served as The 23rd Governor of Virginia, The U.S. Senator from Virginia, etc before becoming the 10th Vice President and President of United States of America in 1841. He was thus nicknamed "His Accidency" or ‘The Accidental President'.

Soon after, he was rejected by the Whig Party after he vetoed a bill to revive the Bank of the United States. Later to ensure a 2nd round as a President, he supported the annexation of Texas into the union thus hoping to gain the trust of both the Democratic and the Whig Parties.

He was the first President whose wife Letitia Christian Tyler died in the White House (1842) and also the first President to get married in the White House when he married Julia Gardiner (1844). Two of his grandchildren Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. and Harrison Ruffin Tyler are still alive.

He died on 18th January 1862 in Virginia after suffering a stroke.

The United States of America issued this circulative commemorative 1 dollar brass coin of John Tyler in 2009. The obverse of this coin depicts the portrait of the ‘Statue of Liberty' within a divided circular border surrounded by a divided legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" within a raised rim. The reverse flan of this coin depicts the bust of John Tyler facing right with legends "JOHN TYLER" above him and "IN GOD WE TRUST/10th PRESIDENT/1841-1845" below him within a raised rim.
