Coin of Delhi Sultan Shams Al-Din Mahmud

Shams Al-Din Mahmud came to the throne in the year 1318 AD. He was a Sultan of Delhi for very short period of time. He declares himself as king of Delhi when Mubarak Shah was in Deccan; he hatched a plot in Deccan to assassinate Mubarak Shah and declare himself as the Sultan of Delhi.Shams Al-Din Mahmud Shah issued the coins in gold and billon. Gold tanka issued by him bears the name of the mint Qila Deogir. Billon coins issued by him are of two types; six gani and two gani. The legend written on the six gani is on a plain surface; whereas legend on two gani has the name of the Sultan Mahmud Shah in the center circle; with the name of sultan written in ‘Devnagari’ in the margin.
One of his gold one-third tanka was estimated for INR 6, 00,000 to 7, 00,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin is written as ‘Shams Ud Din Wa Al-Din’ and reverse of the coin written as ‘As Sultan Mahmud Shah’. This coin is extremely rare.
