2017-03-21 Tue

The 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation is celebrated on a 2017 annual Proof silver dollar featuring a modern allegorical representation of Canada on the reverse.

A strong, majestic, bold, young woman represents a relatively young nation. She carries a protective armour but not a weapon symbolising that the country has always stood for peace. Her brow has a garland of poppies referring to the lyrics of the song O Canada affirm in French. She is calm and her arms are wide open, ready to face all kinds of challenges and successes. She holds the symbolic representation of the British North America Act in one hand and a feather in the other hand paying tribute to First Nations peoples and the Fathers of Confederation. A fur cape reflects Canada’s traditions and fur trade. The obverse features a common portrait of Elizabeth II.

Thirteen rays of light represent each province and the waves represent the oceans that surround Canada. Mount Logan is featured in the background.

The mintage limit of the .9999 fine silver 23.17 gms dollar is 30,000 pieces and each one costs $59.99 Canadian. Selectively gold plated $1 version of the Proof silver dollar is exclusively available in the annual silver Proof set.
