2017-03-16 Thu

The Austrian Mint observed Easter last year by issuing a 5 euro silver coin featuring artist Albrecht Durer's famous painting Jungen Feldhase ("Young Field Hare", 1502). This year, silver and copper Easter coins featuring a lamb will be released. Lambs represent innocence, rebirth and Christianity. Jesus was a shepherd of "Passover lamb" that was sacrificed.

The common obverse of the nine-sided coin features nine shields representing the nine federal provinces of the Republic of Austria. Other inscriptions include REPUBLIK OSTERREICH and EURO.

The reverse features a lamb on flowers and meadow grass holding a banner with a cross representing Jesus' victory over death. A replication of a relief sculpture found in the parish church of St. Egidi in Styria is also shown .

The mintage limit of the 2017 5 Euro Austrian .925 Silver 8.41 g coin is 50,000.
