A lustrous 1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief double eagle, graded AU Details, Cleaned, with minor abrasions was sold for $6,462.50 at a Heritage Auction on 3rd October 2016. The 1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief gold $20 double eagle is highly desired among collectors. Most of the 12,367 pieces that were struck survived because they were treasured. Examples above the grade Very Fine are costly in the market.

Due to the coin’s high relief, people have tampered them to better their appearance. They were commonly Cleaned and polished. Some were used as jewellery as they feature marks of prior mounting on the rims. Since gold is a soft metal they can easily be damaged. The coin offered at the auction was brighter than usual with small abrasions. Other examples below the $7,000 mark are mostly well-worn. Very Fine examples are rare or were used as jewellery.
