Gold Tanka of Bahadur Shah

This beautiful gold one-third tanka was issued by Gujarat Sultan Bahadur Shah in the year AH 941. The full name of Bahadur Shah was Qutb Al Din Bahadur Shah; he ruled Gujarat from AD 1526 to 1537 and was Shams-Al-Din-Muzaffar Shah II’s son.His reign put Gujarat under pressure because of his constant conflicts with the Mughal Emperor Humayun to whom he lost Malwa and Champanir. He also had to face tough times against the Portuguese.
Bahadur Shah issued coins in gold, silver, copper and billon. He issued two types of Silver ‘Pedigree’ tanka, one with the heavy standard which weighs around 12.4g and other weighs around 8.4g.
This extremely rare gold one-third tanka was sold for INR 50,000 at Rajgor’s Auction. The weight of the coin is around 2.29g. Legend on the coin reads as ‘Bahadur Shah’ within the circle on the obverse and ‘Al Sultan’ with date 941 on the reverse.
