Birth Anniversary of a Yogi

2016-01-05 Tue

Paramahansa Yogananda was born today, 5 January in 1893. He was an Indian yogi and guru who introduced millions of westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi.

He had only one goal: God-realization and one programme: to unite East and West by spiritual understanding, to demonstrate the underlying unity of all religions and to awaken divine yearning in all hearts.

The Yogoda Satsanga Society of India which was founded by him in Ranchi has grown today to several schools and colleges all over India. He was a delegate from India to the international Congress of Religions. He spoke of the ancient spiritual teachings of India and the sacred science of Kriya (Raja) Yoga. In 1925, he founded an International Math in Los Angles in U.S.A. He wrote several books of which his "Autobiography of a Yogi" is recognised throughout the world as a spiritual classic.

The Posts and Telegraphs Department had issued a commemorative postage stamp (denomination 25 Paise) in 1977 to honour Paramananda Yogananda.
