Australian 1 and 2 Cent Coins were Discontinued 25 Years Ago
2017-02-02 Thu
It has been 25 years since the 1and 2 cent Australian coins were discontinued, the designs of which are popular even today. ‘Kangaroo and Joey’ was depicted as the original design by Stuart Devlin. The frill-necked lizard was chosen later but the original design was very popular even then. This original coin can be purchased for $12.50 each. In February 1992, both the coins were discontinued but they are still legal tender. The discontinued coins were recycled for making 2000 Sydney Olympic Games bronze medals! New Zealand did the same in 1989.The Royal Mint Melbourne branch, the Royal Mint Perth branch, and the Royal Mint, Llantrisant produced one of the two cent coins. The 2 cent coin was the last circulating coin for Australia struck outside the Royal Australian Mint.
