Also known as the father of modern Hindi literature, Bharatendu Harishchandra was born on 9th September 1850. He had mastered a large number of Indian Languages such as Gujarati, Bengali, etc and always wrote by his pen name Rasa. His most famous writing Andher Nagari (City of Darkness), 1881 is the most popularly played drama of modern Hindi drama.He died at the age of 35 in Varanasi, India on 6th Jan 1885. The cause of his death is unknown. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India gives Bharatendu Harishchandra Awards since 1983 to promote original writings in Hindi mass communication.
