Youth Soccer Championship Celebrated on Saudi Arabian Stamps

Saudi Arabia issued a set of two commemorative stamps on 16th February in denominations 75 halalas and 150h to celebrate the FIFA World Youth Championship in soccer that was held from 17th February to 3rd March 1989. 16 teams from around the world participated in this event.The stamps were designed by the Directorate General of Posts and the Government Security Printing Press in Riyadh printed 500,000 sets on unwatermarked paper in sheets of 50 stamps with two inscribed labels.
The stamps feature a globe, a person in green playing soccer, the trophy of the competition, the national Saudi emblem, the lunar year “1409” in Arabic and the Gregorian year, “1989,” in English, the denomination and currency featured in both Arabic and English, the Arabic wordings translating to “The fifth soccer world cup finals for youth” and ”Government Security Printing Press-Riyadh”.
Saudi Arabians love soccer and King Fahd wanted to build world-class sports complexes throughout his country. Saudi Arabia has also won many trophies in the Asian Cup and the Gulf Countries Cup. Saudi Arabia sponsored the fifth world youth soccer cup competitions because of its first class sports facilities.
