Wrong Planchet Errors Offered at FUN Auctions
2017-01-02 Mon
An MS-63 1977-D Eisenhower dollar was issued on a 40 percent silver planchet probably for celebrating 200 years of dollars struck. The coin is being offered at Heritage’s auctions in Fort Lauderdale from 4th to 9th January.A 2014 American Eagle 1-ounce gold $50 bullion coin struck mistakenly on a .9999 fine 1-ounce gold planchet instead of striking the American Buffalo 1-ounce gold $50 bullion coin is also offered at the event. The coin is termed “Eagalo” and is the only planchet error known in US Mint’s history.
Generally, an American Eagle gold planchet is 91.67 percent gold, 5.33 percent copper and 3 percent silver. Another such example of an error planchet is a 1977-D Eisenhower dollar struck on a copper-silver clad planchet instead of striking a San Francisco Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar dated 1776-1976. It is a bit heavier than a copper-nickel clad Eisenhower dollar and has light straw-gold toning. This MS-63 coin was earlier sold at an auction for $12,925.
