Gold Mohur of Raja Ram Singh of Bundi

In the narrow gorge lies a kingdom surrounded by the oldest fold mountains ranges (Aravalli). Situated in the north-west region as the state of Rajputana was Bundi.This state was founded and ruled by the royal lineage of the Hada Chauhan Rajputs since 1342 AD. The Rajputs of Bundi were called ‘Roa’ but they were later titled as ‘Raja’ by the Mughal. Bundi faces many problems from the confederacy of the Marathas till the early 19th century.
This Gold Mohur belongs to hammered coinage of Raja Ram Singh. The obverse of the coin depicts legend in the roman script which reads as “Victoria Queen” and date below 1860 AD within the dotted circle and on the reverse the legend is depicted in Devanagari script with the Raja’s name and date in Vikram samvat 1917 VS within the dotted circle.
In 1818 the state of Bundi came under the British rule. Bundi supported British in the revolution of 1857 AD and both the world wars. His Highness the Maharao Raja maintains a military force of 446 cavalries, 1835 infantry, 144 Guns and is entitled to a Salute of 17 Guns in 1892 AD.
It remains as the British protectorate till 1947. When British left India the princely state remained with the option to remain as an independent state of join the Indian union. The last ruler of Bundi signed the accession of Bundi to the Indian Union on 7th April 1948.
