Pilot Whale on South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Coins

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands issued a new coin featuring the Pilot Whale under the “Marine Life” series on 8th November. These sea mammals belong to the dolphin family; have a swollen head and no noticeable beaks. After the killer whale, they are the second largest in size. They form cohesive social bonds and the pilot whale is called because of the popular belief that the pod always follows a single leader. The is not proven scientifically is believed to be the cause for mass strandings.

Produced by the Pobjoy Mint, the reverse features a pilot whale in the waters with the head of a second whale above the water, the top of a third whale appears just above the waterline. The obverse features the common portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

There is no mintage limit for the £2 Cupro-nickel 28.2 g BU coin and the mintage limit for the £ .925 silver 28.2 g Proof coin is 10,000. The coins come ins special packaging along with a certificate of authenticity.
