U.S. Issues New Rules For Replicas
2016-11-07 Mon
The Federal Trade Commission recently issued final rules to protect consumers who buy copies of valuable collector's items. Imitation coins and political items must be clearly marked as copies as per the new Act.Collectors who are into completing a set of coins, want to fill a vacant spot with copies. Coin dealers do not generally stock these coins. The availability of such coin depends on the rarity and the demand.
Duplicate coins must now be marked permanently with the calendar year they were manufactured along with the word 'copy'. This new Act aims at getting rid of counterfeiting activities.
The earlier version spoke about the distribution and manufacture of replica coins and other collectible items, apart from sale and commerce. Legal action would be taken against those who produce replicas without the mentioned requirements.
There are some cases where these replica coins come from China and look very real. The fear is that these coins may still be sold as real rare coins. Experts state that one has to be more careful when they buy such coins online.
