First Canadian Woman in Space Celebrated on Coloured Curved Coin

Canada revealed the world’s first curved and glow-in-the-dark silver coin to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the country’s first female astronaut Dr. Bondar‘s space visit on 22nd January 1992 using the United States space shuttle Discovery on mission STS-42. Dr. Bondar is also the first neurologist to fly in outer space.

The reverse design created by Alexandra Lefort, recreates a view of Earth from space, with a focus on Canada. Other inscriptions include Dr. Bondar’s name, a text highlighting the anniversary of her space mission, space shuttle Discovery as it appeared by STS-42 crew members. The obverse features a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt.
