2016-10-17 Mon
Poverty is everyone’s problem. It cuts across age, race, social, geographic or religious boundaries. Whether middle-class or poor, black or white; we are ALL touched by poverty. Hence, every year on October 17 The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated since the year 1993.Officially recognized by the United Nations, this observance manly aims at making the voice of the poor heard. Hence, this day mainly involves commemorations which often include testimonies from people living in poverty, describing their own experiences or those of people they know.
The commemorations also include special stamp issues. A heart wrenching stamp, for instance, was issued on 15th April 1996 by Slovensko Post which depicts a child walking in both bountiful and barren landscapes.
The United Nations Postal Administration invited children around the world to participate in art contest to design a postage stamp and was released in September 2008. The theme was “We Can End Poverty”.
Many countries are trying to tackle poverty but it is becoming very difficult. We blame the Government and their policies but this is the time that we should unite and help them to come out of poverty.
So on this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty lets oath to live simple, so other may simply live! ‘If you can’t feed a hundred people then feed just one’. We know it won’t make a great change but that one person may feel blessed throughout his life.
So do you want to be the reason for some ones smile?
