Royal Mint To Discontinue Round £1 Coins In Favour Of New, Secure Design

2015-12-17 Thu

The UK Royal Mint has minted its final batch of the round £1 coins. The first batch of this type was minted in 1983 and has been in circulation for over 30 years which has made it vulnerable for counterfeiting. The new design has transformed the circular coin into a 12-sided one and will enter into circulation in 2017. The new design is based on the old three-penny bit which was in circulation between 1937 and 1971. The new coin has been hailed as the most secure in the world and has been built to combat counterfeiting.
