Gold sovereign of Travancore Sold for 6 Lakhs

Gold Sovereign of Maharaja Rama Varma V was sold at an amazing price of INR 600000.Issued in 1881/1057 ME (Malayalam calendar), also known as Kollavarsham, this gold sovereign comes under milled coinage. It is a machine made specimen which is extremely rare and uncirculated.
The obverse of this coin depicts the Bust of Rama Varma IV facing right wearing an ornate turban with the date below, within the toothed rime. The reverse side features the coat of arms of Travancore with two elephants with raised trunk over conch shell and an inscription around. All set within the toothed rime.
The princely state of Travancore accepted the help of East India Company against the Mysore Kingdom and after independence, it merged itself into the Indian Union.
This Gold Sovereign of Maharaja Rama Varma V was sold by Classical Numismatic Gallery on 12th December 2013 at the hammer price of INR 600000.
