The International Day of Peace is dedicated to world peace, specifically the absence of war and violence.A UN resolution established the International Day of Peace in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the UN General Assembly. By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to worldwide peace and encouraged people to work in cooperation for this goal. The Secretary-General celebrates the Day in the Peace Garden at United Nations Headquarters by ringing the Peace Bell and observing a minute of silence.

The Day’s theme for 2018 is “The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”.
