A 20-hryvnia commemorative banknote was issued by Ukraine on 1st September to celebrate the 160th birth anniversary of writer and poet Ivan Franko who is also known as one of the architects of the Ukrainian nation. In 2006, commemorative coins were issued to mark this legendary writer’s 150th birthday.

A million notes would be printed. 20,000 of them packed in souvenir envelopes, will be officially sold for 31 hryvnia each.

Ukrainian flax is one of the materials used for producing the notes which reduces costs and adds strength according to officials.

The note also bears colour and motion shifting security features with Franko on the obverse and an image of the Lviv Opera House on the reverse.
