Jahangir’s zodiac Rupee “Crab”
2016-09-17 Sat
As far as we all are concerned, aren’t we all a bit curious about predicting our future. Emperor Jahangir was just as curious as us, and that curiosity can be seen in his coins. In a long line of Zodiac coins there was this Silver Cancer coin of Ahmedabad Mint. These Zodiac silver coins of Jahangir are highly sorted after by collectors. These coins were minted in gold and silver. On its reverse is a Celestial 'Crab' set against the backdrop of the sun rays, with the regnal year below and on the obverse has poetic couplets written in Farsi “Sikka zad dar Ahmedabad az'Inayat- I-Alah /Shah Noor al-Din Jahangir ibn Akbar Badshah “[Coin struck in Ahmedabad from the Almighty's favour, (by) King Nooruddin Jahangir the son of Emperor Akbar].
Poetic couplets first appeared on Leo and Cancer rupee and the second time appeared only on the cancer rupee. The Inayat is a mint-specific couplet for Ahmedabad and ‘Cancer’ Rupee bearing this couplet is much rare than the Daad Zewar couplet.
Classical Numismatic Gallery sold an extremely rare silver crab coin for INR 11,00,000 on 18th August 2012.
