Platinum-Plated Gold Coins to Celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary

The year 2017 marks the 150th year of nationhood for Canada and the Royal Canadian Mint has issued a new set of gold coins to celebrate this glorious occasion.

British North America, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada established a self-governing constitutional monarchy, with the British sovereign as head of state – called the Dominion of Canada on 1st July 1867. Canada now has ten provinces and three territories including Northwest, Yukon, and the latest Nunavut.

For the first time, The Royal Canadian Mint has used enhanced platinum plating for minting the four “1867 – 2017” dual-dated coins in this fractional gold set. Each coin features a leaf from the red maple tree falling onto a bed of leaves.

The coins feature a platinum-plated leaf creating a contrast against the gold background apart from adding sheen to the leaf. Other inscriptions on the reverse include CANADA, 1867-2017, and the purity. The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth.

The 1 dollar.9999 gold coin weighs 1.58 grams; the five dollars .9999 gold coin weighs 3.14 grams; the ten dollars .9999 gold coin weighs 7.8 Grams and the fifty dollars .9999 gold coin weighs 31.16 grams. All of them have a reverse proof with selective platinum plating coins has a product limit of 600 sets. The coins would come in a special custom leaf-shaped maple wood case.
