Birth anniversary of Indian Picasso: M F Hussian

Maqbool Fida Husain commonly known as M F Husain, a modern Indian painter of international fame was born on 17th September in 1915.

A founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay, Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. He was also one of the most celebrated and internationally recognized Indian artists of the 20th century.

He painted the famous national leaders and social workers, mythology and epics. His themes included topics from the depiction of British raj to artistic motifs of rural and cultural India. He is also known for his drawings and his work as a printmaker, photographer, and filmmaker.

India Post has honoured the paintings of this “Indian Picasso” on stamps. “Between the spider and the lamp” a painting by M F Husain was depicted on an INR 3.05 commemorative stamp and a commemorative setenant pair of INR 0.60 each honours “Tilak’s proclamation – ‘Swaraj is my Birth Right’” painting on it.
