Almost Half of Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Coins Sold on the First Day

As per official reports, a total of 47,884 pieces were sold on the first day of the sale of 2016 Standing Liberty Quarter Centennial Gold Coin. With the sale of just 2,116 more coins, half the maximum mintage limit of 100,000 would be off the shelf.The demand was so high that the website for online sale crashed and telephone ordering was also disrupted. Even then, many managed to buy this most anticipated coin, as ordering was limited to 1 coin per household and its initial retail price was $485.00 USD.
The coin features a standing Lady Liberty, dressed in Classic Greek attire, with a Phrygian cap, facing a wall or garden enclosure. She holds a shield in her left arm and an olive branch in her right hand. It features the “Type I” obverse design. The wall depicts 13 stars and the inscription “In God We Trust”. Other inscriptions include 2016, the letter “M”, Hermon MacNeil’s designer mark, AU, 24K, 1/4 OZ and the West Point mint mark “W”.
The reverse features a flying eagle, thirteen stars along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR.
The edges of the coins are reeded, weigh a quarter ounce and have a smaller a diameter of 22 mm as compared to the Standing Liberty Quarter’s 24.3 mm.
