Alex Ovechkin received the rookie of the year award on 14th October 2006 game against Atlanta and handed out solid bronze medallion to fans.

21-year-old left wing Alex Ovechkin was the first Washington Capitals rookie who was awarded the annual Calder Memorial Trophy which is given to the best first-year player in the NHL, voted by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the season. He scored more than a record 50 goals and 100 points. The record was also a third all-time among NHL rookies. He finished third overall in NHL scoring and tied for third in goals. His 425 shots led the league and fetched the fourth-highest total in NHL history.
