Winged Horse Pegasus on Latest Coin from Virgin Islands

2016-09-12 Mon

On 7th September British Virgin Islands released a new silver bullion coin featuring the mythological Ancient Greece story of Pegasus, the white divine stallion with wings who is known for his wisdom and inspiration.

Perseus was the son of Danae and Zeus who was sent to kill one of the three Gorgons - Medusa. Anyone who looked at Medusa would turn to a stone which is why the God Hermes and the Goddess Athena gifted Perseus a shield which he used as a mirror to indirectly look at Medusa. Perseus beheaded Medusa that was born from the blood of the Gorgon.

Perseus tamed the magnificent winged horse Pegasus who helped Perseus rescue princess Andromeda and carried him to Mount Helicon where he was taken care of by the Muses.

The greatest hero - Bellerophon saw the goddess with a golden bridle at the temple of Athena. When he woke up on the next day, only the bridle remained. He found Pegasus drinking at a spring. Bellerophon put the bridle on the winged horse’s head and Pegasus became gentle since then.

The reverse features the winged horse Pegasus and the goddess Athena. The obverse features the new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which is exclusive to the Pobjoy Mint. Both designs bear a frosted background.

The mintage limit of this 1 Dollar 31.1 Grams .999 Silver Bullion strike coin is 50,000 pieces and its sale would begin from 3rd October 2016.
