PCGS Offering $10,000 Per Rare Coin For Getting Them Graded

2016-09-03 Sat

PCGS would be offering a reward of $10,000 for five different rare coins that were minted but not circulated for several reasons like low mintage limit, disputes in legislation etc. The total giveaway would be worth $50,000.

The five rare coins are listed below:

The 1964-D Peace Dollar was released between 1921 and 1935 without congressional sanction because of the impractical high relief design. 45 million coins were supposed to be struck at the Denver Mint but the coins were never circulated and were melted down. Some of these rare coins still exist.

Only 700 1873 S Seated Dollars out of which 1 coin is believed to have survived and the rest were melted down.

Only 24 1894-S Barber Dime or Liberty Head were minted, out of which only 9 exist. Some believe that they were struck by the superintendent as gifts for bankers. Others say that books were off by $2.40, and they were struck to offset the balance.

50 1841 O Coronet Head Half Eagle coins were produced at the New Orleans Mint and almost all of them were melted down.

Just one 1894 Templeton Reid $25 piece is believed to exist today which was stolen from the Mint in 1858.

The five coins would be graded by PCGS and returned back to the owners with the prize money!
