2016-09-01 Thu

A circulating commemorative €2 coin will be released in October by Vatican City to observe the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. December 8th, 2015 to 20th November 2016 was declared as the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy by Pope Francis.

This period is different from the ordinary cycle of jubilees, as it is observed once in every 25 years in the Catholic Church. The special theme for this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy is “on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s actions in our lives.”

The obverse features St. Martin of Tours sharing his room with a poor man. Saint Martin was the bishop of Tours. Other inscriptions include GIUBILEO DELLA MISERICORDIA and CITTA DEL VATICANO, 2016, the R Mint mark and the name of the artist M. CRISCIOTTI.

The €2 bi-metallic coin weighs 8.5 grams and its outer ring features the 12 stars of the European flag. The common reverse shows a map of the European Union and the mintage limit of the coin is 105,000 pieces.
