South American Specimens Book Realizes $141,000 at Stack's Bowers Auction

A book of South American specimen notes was sold for $141,000 - almost thrice its estimated value at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ auction which was held at World’s Fair of Money in Anaheim, Calif. The book had over 100 specimens and 40 vignettes that were issued using American printers including American Bank Note Co., Waterlow & Sons, and Bradbury Wilkinson.

An 1865 Canadian $1 Port Hope note realized $12,925, a $2 St. John’s Newfoundland note graded Gem Uncirculated 65 Exceptional Paper Quality was sold for $14,100. A 1934 Serial Number 1 Reserve Bank of New Zealand 10-shilling note, graded Very Choice New 64 was auctioned for $35,520. A 10-rupee specimen note from the Reserve Bank of India was sold for $5,405, almost double its estimate.

Several other banknotes were auctioned at the event for a handsome amount.
