2016-08-26 Fri

The 100th anniversary of Boys Town would be celebrated next year with the release of new commemorative gold, silver and clad coins in proof and uncirculated finishes. The coin designs were revealed on Tuesday during a ceremony in Boys Town Music Hall, Nebraska.

Boys Town is a non-profit organization which serves underprivileged children and helps over 2 million children each year. It was established by Father Edward Flanagan on December 12th 1917 and major contributions have come in from Father Flanagan. These coins celebrate the outstanding work that has been done by the organization over 100 years.

Six designs have been revealed which include the obverse and reverse designs for each of the three coins. Gold coins feature a portrait of Father Edward Flanagan on the obverse. A young oak tree growing from an acorn is depicted on the reverse. Silver coins depict a girl looking upward at the branches of an oak tree on the obverse. The reverse features an oak tree offering shelter to a family. Clad half-dollar obverses feature an older brother holding the hand of his younger brother and walking towards Father Flanagan’s home in 1917. Their reverse depicts a Boys Town neighbourhood.

50,000 $5 gold coins, 350,000 silver dollars, and 300,000 clad half-dollars would be minted. A portion of the sale would be offered as charity to the Boys Town Organization.

Other information would be revealed just before the release in 2017.
