2016-08-22 Mon

The 50th anniversary of the first moon landing will be celebrated in 2019 and the U.S. Mint has plans to release the half-centennial commemorative curved gold, silver and clad coins featuring the depiction of the popular photograph reflected in Buzz Aldrin's helmet visor which was taken by Neil Armstrong on 20th July 1969. A special bill was also introduced in 2015 for the issue of these coins.

The proceeds of the coin will be donated to Astronaut Memorial Foundation and Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, as well as the Smithsonian's "Destination Moon" gallery opening at the National Air and Space Museum in 2020. The coins would be minted in such a way that taxpayers would not bear any cost.

The Act has got 300 cosponsors but still lies with the Senate side. Efforts are being made to gain 67 cosponsors inside the Senate. The general public is being encouraged to express their desire for the coins. The senate is seeking calls or emails of support till 15th September. Officials have asked space enthusiasts to join the fight for the coin’s release.
