Canada issued another gold coin depicting the famous or rather infamous ship Amazon under the “Tall Ships” series. The ship has a mysterious story behind it and the fate of its owners and sailors was rather tragic. Amazon was built in Spencer’s Island, Nova Scotia using local timber and launched on 18th May, 1861. The ship had to go through several misfortunate incidents and had crashed in storms, was abandoned, captured, restored many times. It was owned by many different sailors and finally on December 5, 1872, it was spotted between the Azores Islands and the coast of Portugal with no sign of life. It was brought to the port of Gibraltar on December 12, 1872. The ship was known for several controversies and its real story is still a big mystery. The 200 Dollars .999 gold 31.1 Grams coin features the originally built Amazon. The ship sails forward through the rough waters of Atlantic. Intricate detailing makes the design look even more beautiful. A pennant features the ship’s name and the British ensign flown from the gaff flaps in the wind. The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the mintage is limited to just 275 pieces.
