2016-08-20 Sat
On 2nd August, the Bank of Thailand officially announced about the second commemorative banknote to honour its royal family. 20 million 500-baht notes were issued on 11th August as a part of the Queen’s 84th birthday celebration. The 70th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne was celebrated with the issue of 70-baht commemorative notes in June. The obverse is similar to the current 500-baht note with its portrait of the king. The reverse design is different and features the Queen in a Thai Boromphiman costume. An image of the royal family, the queen looking at products manufactured in royally sponsored projects, and the flowers named Queen Sirikit Cattleya and Queen Sirikit Rose are also featured on the reverse.
All commercial and state-owned banks will distribute the notes. 10,000 ATMs with a sticker saying “the machine has the commemorative banknotes” will also issue these special notes.
