Celtic Coin Hoard Count is Less Than Expected

Officials have revealed that the biggest Celtic hoard that has been discovered has some thousand coins less than the 70,000 number that was originally predicted. The coins are being cleared and studied at a special laboratory at La Hougue Bie Museum in Grouville. More jewellery has been recovered from the site than expected.

The Hallaton treasure was found in 2000 and comprised of 5,000 Iron age silver coins, gold coins, and jewellery. The Staffordshire Hoard was found in 2009 and is considered to be the largest Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork hoard comprising of more than 3,500 items. The Sutton Hoo is an Anglo-Saxon treasure which was discovered 1939 with 1,000 items like gold, garnet and weapons. The 9th Century Cuerdale treasures discovered in 1840 featured over 8,600 mainly silver items of Viking origin. The Hoxne Hoard which was found in 1992 was made of almost 15,000 gold and silver coins from late Roman Britain. A hoard was discovered in a Jersey field in 2012. Experts are really excited to find these 1000-year-old items.

Officials have stated that the process of separating the coins would end in December. After final evaluation of the hoard, they would be given to the States of Jersey who would then decide if they want to purchase it.
