1804 Capped Bust Gold $5 Coin sold for $5,750
2016-08-17 Wed
An 1804, Capped Bust gold $5 half eagle, of the Small 8 type was auctioned for $5,750 on 29th July as part of the Missouri Numismatic Society’s 56th annual coin show at the Saint Charles Convention Centre in metropolitan St. Louis.Gold coins produced at the Philadelphia Mint in the late 18th century and the early 19th century are expensive as they are rarer when compared to the silver and copper coins. This particular coin had some problems like most other coins of this type and were Repaired and Cleaned by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.
The open fields are abraded to eradicate unwanted contact marks. But this has devalued the coin with undesired sharpness and flowline luster within the periphery. Hence the coin is not priced as much as the other coins of the same type.
