On this day India lost one of the precious jewels in her treasure. Mintage world pays tribute to Surendranath Banerjee – one of the early freedom fighters on his 93rd death anniversary.

Being among the earliest of Indian politicians in the pre-independence era, Sir Surendranath Banerjee established the Indian National Association that he later merged with the Indian National Congress. At a very young age he developed a reproach towards racial discrimination of the British. Thus, he whipped up a strong protest against this.

Banerjee became a senior member of the Indian National Congress. Initially he worked as a professor of English at the Metropolitan Institution. From time to time, he launched The Bengali' newspaper which addressed political and social issues. His main focus was on the racial discrimination practiced by the British which made him very popular.

When Indian National Congress was established, Surendranath Banerjee served as its president between 1898 and 1904. However, this pioneer leader of Indian politics left this world on 6th August 1925 and India lost her important treasure. His name is commemorated in the names of various institutes.

This gem of a person is commemorated by India Post in a special stamp. This stamp of INR 0.50 features his portrait with “Tiranga” on either side.
