Rare 1974-D Aluminium Cent to be Displayed at ANA Convention

2016-08-04 Thu

The 1974-D Lincoln aluminium cent will be on public display at the ANA convention in Anaheim, Calif from Aug 9th to 13th. The Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing will sell products and display rarities. Sheets of $100,000 notes will also be on display.

The 1974-D Lincoln aluminium cent was discovered in September 2013 in a small bag of coins of late Harry Edmond Lawrence. The aluminium cent was gifted to him during his retirement by Denver Mint officials. It was supposed to be a highlight of Heritage’s April 24, 2014, Central States Numismatic Society Platinum Night auction but was pulled back from it for some reasons.

A legal case began where both the owners and the mint fought to retain the coins. It was resolved in March 2016 when Randall Lawrence and McConnell agreed to return the cent to the Mint in San Diego on 17th March.

These experimental coins were made between 1974 and 1975 at Philadelphia Mint but 1974-D aluminium cents of the Denver Mint were never heard of. Officials said that the planchets from the Philadelphia Mint were sent to the Denver Mint.
