Marathi Bhasha Diwas

Thu

February 27 is celebrated as Marathi Language Pride Day, honouring the rich heritage of the Marathi language.

Marathi is a very important language, as many of our medieval scriptures are written in it. Bakhar is a form of historical narrative composed in Marathi prose. Bakhars represent one of the earliest genres of medieval Marathi literature. More than 200 bakhars were written between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, with the most significant ones chronicling the deeds of the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj.

This day also marks the birth anniversary of Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, popularly known as Kusumagraj, a celebrated Marathi poet, playwright, novelist, and short story writer.
