Bagalkot is a district in Karnataka located about 78 km south of Bijapur along the Ghataprabha River. In the 14th century, the region was controlled by the Vijayanagar Empire until the Adil Shahi of Bijapur took over in the mid-16th century.
Subsequently, it came under the power of the Savanur Nawabs. In 1755, the Peshwas gained control and transferred authority to the Raste family. In 1778, Hyder Ali, the king of Mysore, captured it but was soon restored by the Peshwas. In 1810, the Peshwas handed the town over to Nilkanth Rao, the Sursubahdar. It remained with the Marathas until 1818 when General Munro took it and incorporated it into the Bijapur division of the Bombay Presidency.
