2024-09-17 Tue
The hairpin-shaped coin, known as a ‘Larin’, was minted in Rajapur, weighs 4.57g, and was issued during the reign of Ali Adil Shah of Bijapur. The Larin originates from “Lar” in Iran, where they were first minted and primarily issued by the Safavid dynasty of Iran. The Larine coins were used for maritime trade during medieval India, which was crucial in protecting against sea-pirate attacks. The discovery of this hoard of larin was significant for historians and numismatists, as it revealed that the town of Rajapur was under the control of Bijapur during the reign of Ali Adil Shah II.
