Muhammad Azam Shah was the third son of the sixth Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. After Aurangzeb's death in 1707 CE, Muhammad Azam Shah ascended to the throne of the Mughal Empire. However, in the same year, he was defeated by his stepbrother, Muhammad Mu’azzam, in the battle of Jajau. Muhammad Mu’azzam later took the title 'Bahadur Shah I' and became the Mughal Emperor.

Azam Shah issued a silver rupee weighing 11.55g minted at Ahmedabad in AH 1119.

The obverse is inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Ba Daulat-Wa-Jah Badshah Mamulik Azam Shah' with AH 1119’. The reverse is inscribed as ‘Julus-e-Ashraf, Sanah Ahad zarb Ahmadabad’.
