Use of Fasli Dates on Indian Coins
2023-03-28 Tue
#Fasli Era corresponds to the nation's crop (crop=Fasl) season. The era was introduced coinciding with Akbar's accession AH 963. This was also the year 1612 in the #Hindu Samvat period. In 1637-38, the Fasli Era was introduced in the #Maratha region but among those, the #Ganapati - Pantapradhan coins with the FASLI date 1202(obverse), corresponding to 1792 AD (1202 + 590) with Regnal Year- 27 (reverse), are one of the greatest rarities of Indian Coinage. They were struck by the #Patwardhans of #Miraj, to prove their loyalty towards the #Peshwa due to the probable recent escalations of conflicts between Chhatrapati of Kolhapur, during the end of the 18th Century.
The FE dates are also found on the later #Maratha coins and on the transition coinages of #Bombay #Presidency (East India Company), post 1818 Anglo-Maratha war.
