One of the largest industries is the textile industry in India. India is the world's largest cotton producer, accounting for approximately 22% of global cotton production. Gujarat is the largest producer of cotton in India.

Cowasji Nanabhai Davar started India's first cotton mill named "the Bombay Spinning Mills" was set up on February 22, 1854. The Bombay Spinning Mills and Weaving Company was the first cotton mill established in Bombay on July 7, 1854, at Tardeo, South Bombay.

A definitive Stamp was issued on December 7, 1980.
