Ranjit Singh, also known as 'Sher-e-Punjab' or the 'Lion of Punjab', was the great ruler and the founder of the Sikh Empire. He ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was born Buddha Singh to on 13 November 1780. His father was the chief of the Sukerchakia misl estates. After his father's death, he became the chief of the Sukerchakia group at 12. Though Ranjit Singh was uneducated, he was well-trained in martial arts, horse riding and firearms. Due to his remarkable talent and fighting expertise he was named as ‘Ranjit’, meaning victor. Maharah Ranjit Singh after sitting on the throne expanded the territory of his empire from Khyber Pass in the west to western Tibet in the east and from Kashmir in the north to Mithankot in the south.
