2023-01-13 Fri
Alfonso Caso Andrade, a Mexican Archaeologist, was born on 1st February 1896. He contributed to Pre-Columbian studies. Caso believed that the way to understand the cultural roots of Mexico is through the systematic study of ancient Mexican civilizations. He through his work sought to explain Mesoamerican civilization developments in terms of continuity and internal evolution, rejecting earlier theories about cultural change being the result of trans-cultural diffusion. He approached it in an interdisciplinary manner, drawing on linguistics, ethnography, history and demography.
He discovered the excavations at Monte Alban, particularly “Tomb Seven”, in which they found several gold pieces and offerings. Caso also discovered many sites in the Mixteca. Along with finding new sites he also interpreted them.
Caso wrote books about native Mesoamerican cultures, including the Olmec, Mixtec, Zapotec and Aztec. He died on 30th November 1970.
The above-given stamp is a commemorative stamp of Dr Alfonso Caso. This Sepia-coloured stamp was issued on 1st February 1996 by Mexico. It has a face value of 1.80 Mexican pesos. This stamp portrays an image of dr. Caso to the right side and with his name on its left side and the face value and the country is at the top left corner.
