Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January 1863. He was an Indian monk, philosopher, religious teacher, author and the chief disciple of Ramakrishna.Vivekananda was a key figure in introducing Yoga and Vedanta to the Western World. He became a popular figure after his speech, where he introduced Hinduism to the Americans. His speech was so impactful that an American newspaper described him saying “an orator by divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the parliament.” He gave hundreds of lectures across America, England and Europe after his success in the parliament. He founded the Vedanta Society of New York and the Vedanta Society of San Francisco.
Vivekananda was a part of the Hindu reform movements. He even contributed to the thought of nationalism in colonial India. He founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission and was regarded as a Patriotic Saint. His birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day.
