Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds who belong to the Spheniscidae family. They mostly live in the Southern Hemisphere. Only the Galapagos penguin is found north of the Equator. Penguins have a highly adapted life in the water and have counter shaded dark and white plumage and flippers for swimming. They feed on sea life, which they catch with their bills and swallow whole. A penguin has a spiny tongue and powerful jaws to grip slippery prey. The Emperor penguin is the largest living species. On average, adults are about 3 ft 7 inches tall and weigh 35 kg. The little blue penguin is the smallest species known as the fairy penguin, weighing 12-13 kg and about 12-13 inches tall. The larger penguins inhabit the colder regions, and the smaller ones live in temperate or tropical areas.
The above-given stamp is a commemorative stamp of Penguins. This multicolour stamp was issued on 21st March 2009 by Romania. It has a face value of 1.60 Romanian leu.
