Italy, a country in Europe with a long Mediterranean coastline, had a major influence on culture and cuisine. Victor Emmanuel II reigned as King of Sardinia from 1849 until March 17, 1861, when he assumed the title of King of Italy, becoming the first king of an independent, united Italy since the 6th century. He held this position until he died in 1878. He was a meeting place for Italian nationalists of all stripes—monarchists, Republicans etc.

On January 1, 1874, Italy issued its first stamp. King Victor Emanuel II was depicted on a stamp. A "Biglietti di Ricognizione Postale; (postal recognition stamp) series is a set of stamps. Famous people, heads of state, kings, men, and royalty are among the themes. The stamp was made of brown and yellow ink. A Savoy shield watermark has appeared. The stamp has 15 perforations. It is Italian and has a face value of 10 centesimo.
