Jacques-Louis David, born on 30th August 1748, was a French painter. He painted in the Neoclassical style. In the 1780s, His cerebral brand of history painting brought a change in taste towards Classical Austerity and severity and heightened feeling away from the Rococo frivolity. Classical Austerity harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Regime.David became a supporter of the French Revolution and was a good friend of Maximilien Robespierre. He was effectively a dictator of arts under the French Republic. David aligned himself with Napoleon after the fall of Robespierre from power. He developed his Empire style during that time as it was notable for its use of warm Venetian colours.
After the revival of the Bourbon revival, David exiled himself to Brussels, where he remained until his death. David died on 29th December 1825. David had many pupils, making him a strong influence on the French art of the early 19th century, especially the academic Salon painting.
