Rare Double Plug 1795 Silver Dollar to be Auctioned

2016-07-22 Fri

American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money is scheduled in August and a dual-plugged 1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar is all set to be auctioned at the event. The coin is graded AU53 and is one-of-its-kind with two silver plugs, each 4 millimetres in diameter.

Officials state that many of these 1794 and 1795 silver coins come with Mint-inserted plug to make planchets with the exact weight, just before striking them. This particular 1795 Flowing Hair dollar has two Mint-inserted silver plugs, one on Liberty’s neck, across her jaw line on the obverse and the other between the ribbon ends on the reverse.

Experts believe that the first plug did not help in getting the weight of the planchet right, which is why the second plug was inserted. The coin weighs 26.98 grams and was produced at Philadelphia mint.

The coin has been discovered after 221 years now and hence is expected to steal the limelight at the Auction.
